A Voice for Christian Education

Review of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA)

In August, the Law Reform Commission of Western Australia (LRC) released a Discussion Paper which outlined options and posed questions about amendment to Western Australia’s anti-discrimination laws. The LRC called for submissions in response to their Discussion Paper. These submissions will assist the LRC in preparing their report on potential updates to the Act, which will be handed to the Attorney-General.

In 29 October, AACS made a submission to the LRC focussing on the retention of section 73 of the Act which exempts “religious” educational institutions from being subject to the Act for actions relating to employment, contracting and enrolment. It is our strongly-held view that these provisions are necessary to maintain your school’s distinctive Christian character and unique pedagogical approach. You can read our submission here.

Many of our member schools have made their own submissions, which is very encouraging, we look forwward to the LRC's report.
