Victorian anti-vilification laws

Victorian anti-vilification laws

The Victorian Government's proposed changes to Victoria’s anti-vilification laws will have a chilling effect on freedom of expression within our schools and the broader faith community.

The new law would include a much broader range of areas to be protected against vilification, including ‘sexual orientation’ and ‘gender identity’. Of particular concern is the new test for vilification which would be lowered to include public conduct that is simply likely to incite hatred, contempt, revulsion or ridicule, as opposed to conduct that actually has this effect. It further applies to public conduct considered reasonably likely to be harmful.

Teaching within Christian schools could be considered 'public' with no protections for teaching traditional biblical concepts and sexual ethics.
