Could posting a Bible verse be cancelled as "disinformation" under the federal Government's proposed Communications Legislation Amendment (Combatting Misinformation and Disinformation) Bill? The proposed law would give the Australian Communications and Media Authority powers to require digital communications platform providers to manage the perceived risk that "misinformation" and "disinformation" poses on digital communications platforms in Australia.
AACS have significant concerns about the overall effect of the Bill on the free dissemination of ideas in the public sphere – in particular, religious speech and debate. The Bill would place significant constraints on digital communications platform providers and incentivises them to over-censor content on the possibility that it might be “harmful”.
