Foundations of Faith Staff Survey

MEDIA RELEASE

2 September 2024

An alliance of Christian school associations has today released significant findings from its survey of over 5,000 teaching and non-teaching staff across Christian schools nationwide highlighting the critical role faith plays in the lives of staff and students within Christian schools.

This release comes at a pivotal time as the Tasmanian Government Administration Committee conducts its inquiry into bullying and discrimination in Tasmanian schools with Christian school leaders appearing at the public hearing on tomorrow.

Vanessa Cheng, Executive Officer of the Australian Association of Christian Schools said, "The survey findings highlight the deep and unwavering commitment of Christian school staff to their faith and its expression within their roles. As the Tasmanian inquiry examines issues of bullying and discrimination, it is important to recognise that faith-based education plays a unique and positive role in nurturing students' character, moral compass, and understanding of their ability to contribute positively to society."

The survey revealed overwhelming support for the ability of Christian schools to employ staff who share the same faith as the school community. Specifically, more than 99% of all staff agreed or strongly agreed that their school should be able to employ staff who align with the school's beliefs. This reinforces the integral connection between faith and education in Christian schools, where faith is not just a subject but a lived experience that informs every aspect of school life.

The survey also reveals a concerning perception among Christian school staff regarding the broader societal and governmental understanding of their roles. Less than half (43%) of the teachers surveyed believe that their contribution as faith-based educators is valued by government and society. Additionally, there is strong agreement that media portrayals of Christian schools are often negative and inaccurate, with nearly 96% of respondents believing that the media does not accurately represent faith-based schooling.

Mrs Cheng said "Christian schools are committed to providing a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for all students, grounded in a Christian worldview. As the inquiry continues, we urge policymakers to consider the valuable role that faith-based schools play in shaping the next generation and to protect the freedoms that allow these schools to remain true to their mission."
