Proposed Tasmanian Conversion Practice Laws

A report by the Tasmanian Law Reform Institute contains a number of recommendations which, if enacted by the Tasmanian Government, could restrict parents and medical practitioners’ capacity to provide best care options for their children and patients.

To be clear, AACS does NOT support any harmful or coercive “gay conversion” practices occurring in any setting.

But similar legislation recently introduced in Victoria, the Change or Suppression (Conversion) Practises Prohibition Act 2021 (VIC) goes far beyond those practice and restricts the ability of parents, health practiioners, educators and pastors to teach and explore alternative views about gender and sexuality.

We need your help to let Tasmanian politicians know how Christian schools and their communities feel about the recommendations in the report.

I am writing to let you know I'm concerned about Premier Rockliff’s plan to implement the recommendations contained within the Tasmanian Law Reform Institute’s Report, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Conversion Practices. 
The Report recommends extensive changes to legislation banning health care options available for people who may be experiencing gender confusion or exploring questions about their sexuality, such as counselling.
Christian parents, teachers and pastors could be prevented from teaching their children that people are born either biologically male or female. They will also be restricted in promoting their beliefs about appropriate expressions of sexual beahvoiur consistent with their religious beliefs.
Tasmanians must be allowed to express their beliefs and be allowed to access counselling and spiritual guidance about these deeply personal topics.
I urge you to carefully consider the implications on the freedom of parents and health care professionals to provide best care options for young people before implementing any of the recommendations from the Tasmanian Law Reform Insitute Report.
